AGARTALA, Oct 29 (TIWN): Despite the 12 refills in a year assurance, it is likely that the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) will be able to provide only about eight LPG refills to consumers of the State this year.Meanwhile, a LPG consumer of Agartala confided to TIWN that he has got only four subsidised LPG refills so far for this year.
Since the three refills were not sufficient for his family use, the consumer bought two LPG refills from the black market.
An official of Divisional Retail Sales Office of IOC, Agartala expressed confidence that six subsidised LPG refills will be provided to LPG consumers this year.
There are 76 LPG distributors in the state. The present LPG supply position in the State is far below the daily LPG need.
The problem of LPG supply shortage can be solved if LPG supply is increased to 7650 cylinders or 25 truck loads or 108.025 metric tons daily. The IOC is inviting tenders from transporters for transhipping LPG.Once the tender, which is in process, is completed, the supply of LPG will be increased by 50 percent.Prolonged and frequent road blockade along the highways is another problem, the IOC official said..
An LPG crisis has hit Tripura over the past few weeks. The black marketeering of LPG has also been contributing to more woes to the common consumers with a gas cylinder, which is priced at Rs 400, is being sold at Rs 1000 - Rs 1200 in the open market.
Consumers were seen in queues in front of LPG outlets in the capital town for over 5- 6 hours to collect refilled cylinders. But the cylinders are available in the open market at a higher price.
