AGARTALA, Oct 5 (TIWN): Minister for DoNER Dr.Jitendra singh would inaugurate the three day long annual conference of north eastern Diabetes Society, NEDSCON at Rabindra Bhawan on October 9, said Dr. PK Bhattacharaya, Chairman of the organising committee of NEDSCON.
The scientific session of the conference would hold on October 10 and 11.
The North Eastern Diabetes Society (NEDS), a non-profit organization of prominent diabetologist and endocrinologist of the North-east. This day was chosen as the birthday of Fedrick Banting, a medical scientist who co-discovered Insulin and was the first person to use it on humans.
However, Health Minister Badal Chowdhury would remain present in the program as the guest of the honour.
Chief Secretary YP Singh, president of IDF-Dr.M Sadikot, president of Bagladesh Diabetes Association –professor AK Azad Khan, director of General of Health services, government of Sikkim- Dr Kumar Bhandari and director of Medical education, state government-Dr Basudev Bhattacherjee along with other dignitaries to remain present in the program.
Diabetes in Indians is five times the rate of white population. Inactive life style with lack of exercise and high intake of high caloric value food and salt leads to Central Obesity and insulin resistance and is the main reason for increase in diabetes in Indians. Diabetes patients have exceeded more than fifty percent from what it was in the year 1995. According to World Health Organization (WHO) diabetes would become seventh leading cause of death by the year 2030 and more than fifty percent rise would be seen in the next 20 years.
