'Attack on judges - dangerous for democracy', HC CJ Deepak Gupta visits Sabroom , sits for a high level meeting with judges, police officers

AGARTALA, September 5 (TIWN): Evoking a worry among the ruling CPI-M cadres the High Court Chief Justice Deepak Gupta annoyed over the attack on the judicial system of the state had visited Sabroom Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Court on Saturday to take a stock of the situation and the incident took place on September 2 during the 24 hours general strike called by the CPI-M backed Trade Union.

While taking a stock of the deteriorated situation CJ Deepak Gupta said, “The attack on the judges is simply attacking on the entire judicial system of the state and it is very dangerous for the democracy.”

Adding to that he pointed out that the culprits involved in the incident will not be spared by any means and had directed the police authority to take necessary steps against them. The Police however under immense pressure from the court and the lawyers’ body had managed to arrest only two CPI-M cadres linked to the incident and left others roam free yet today. The two arrested cadres were later send to jail custody till September 6

The incident occurred on September 2 while a group of CPI-M picketers made a sudden attack on Sabroom SDM Court and had assaulted the judge Saurabh Saha and also left two police officer injured critically. The unruly move has come up after the court authorities refused to participate in the strike.

Besides, the police on yet another similar incident occurred on the same day at Belonia Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) Court had failed to detain the culprits. The two separate incident had rocked the entire state evoking a serious question over the role of the ruling CPI-M in Tripura.

Earlier HC CJ Deepak Gupta writing to Chief Minister Manik Sarkar had directed the government to take a disciplinary action against the involved accused persons. Sarkar later before leaving the state for Bangalore had forwarded the notice to state Chief Secretary (CS) Y P Singh.
