AGARTALA, August 5 (TIWN): Former International Lawn Tennis player Joydeep Mukherjee on Monday met Chief Minister Manik Sarkar to discuss the issue of Dasharath Deb Sports Complex, said an official here on Tuesday.
Dasarath Deb State Sports Complex in Agartala has been named after Dasarath Deb, the late Chief Minister of the state.
It has a seating capacity of more than 20,000 people. Among the facilities are field with 400 m track, scientific swimming pool named Raima and sports school.
The Youth Affair and Sports Department is going to construct a modern Lawn Tennis Complex.
Around one acre land will be used to construct the lawn where four courts will be there.
However, to take suggestion over the construction of the tennis court the state has called for Former International Lawn Tennis player Joydeep Mukherjee.
He had witnessed the Sports Complex and gave suggestion on it.
Jaideep Mukherjee is considered to be one of the greatest Tennis players India has produced, so far.
Jaideep's father, Adhip Mukherjee was an avid sportsperson and a Cambridge Blue in Hockey, and he encouraged Mukherjee a lot to become a sportsperson.
While pursuing his studies at the La Martiniere College, Kolkata, Mukherjee took active part in many sporting events like soccer, hockey, boxing, cricket and rugby.
However, he eventually chose Tennis, largely due to an accident in 1952.
Mukherjee broke his collarbone while playing rugby at school following which the doctor directed him to keep away from such contact sports.
Mukherjee then joined the Rajkumari Amrit Kaur Tennis Coaching Scheme of the Union Government in 1954 and that was the beginning of Mukherjee 's Tennis career.
