AGARTALA, July 12 (TIWN): On the occasion of 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, a seminar was held at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan with the initiatives of the Tripura Tapasili Jati Shomonnoy Samiti on Sunday. The theme of the seminar was Present India and Relevance of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.
Addressing the seminar, Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat said that despite the abolition of the untouchability by Indian constitution in the year 1950, till day the people of the interior parts of various states in the country are triggered with the illegal practice of the untouchability.
She mentioned that Dr. B. R. Ambedkar has always fought for the dalits and poor people and whose impact can be witnessed in the Left ruled state Tripura, except any other state in the country.
The untouchables are not allowed to use the same well, visit the same temples, cannot have tea or water by the same glasses or cups, said Karat. She also mentioned that there are people who are even not allowed to claim their land which are legally of their own.
Enhancing to the issue she said that there are children of Dalit community who were frequently asked to sit back in the class room. The communities are forced to live in extreme poverty, without land and opportunities.
Dalits are demoted to the most of the tasks like sweepers, cobblers, lather workers and many more unskilled tasks, said Brinda Karat. She further added that the dalit women had to face triple burden of the caste, gender and class as they have been forced to do various illicit works including works which are against their wish and also they are being treated as thrash.
Welfare of Scheduled Caste (SC) Minister Ratan Bhowmik, State Committee Secretary Bijan Dhar, MP Jharna Das Baidya and others were presented at the seminar.
