ICAR Tripura organized training and distribution of poultry birds for backyard poultry farming

LEMBUCHERRA, June 30 (TIWN): With the initiatives of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Tripura Centre located in Lembucherra, women farmers, who share a major activeness in agriculture along with men, have given training and 690 newly developed chicks were given to them to inspire them to be self dependent by keeping interest in farming and agriculture.

The training programme was held on 29th June, at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Tripura Centre, Lembucherra under Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) Project. The training was further focused on naturally available feed resources and diseases’ prevention aspects in backyard poultry birds.

The Senior Veterinary Officer, ARDD, TTAADC, Khumlung, West Tripura, Dr. Pranab Debnath, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The welcome speech was given by Dr. M. Datta, Joint Director, ICAR Tripura Centre.

The training was given by Dr. Vinay Singh, Scientist (Poultry Science) of ICAR, Tripura Centre and Shri. Bikram Debbarma, Technical Officer of ICAR, Tripura Centre on various aspects of backyard poultry farming like selection of poultry birds for backyard farming, feeds and feeding management, general care and management, disease and health care and many other aspects of backyard poultry farming.

Keeping in mind the importance of backyard poultry farming in rural areas of Tripura, during the whole programme lectures were given on breeding among Tripura local bird, coloured broiler and Dahlem Red bird. Dr. Avijit Haldar, Principal Scientist (Livestock Production) of ICAR, Tripura Centre narrated the significance of backyard poultry farming in rural economy.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Pranab Debnath, Senior Veterinary Officer, ARDD, TTAADC, Khumlung, West Tripura, highly praised ICAR, Tripura Centre for organizing such type of tribal women farmers’ involved programme and supported the farmers with providing newly developed rural poultry birds. He emphasized the importance of backyard poultry farming for augmenting production of meat and eggs and ensuring food security in the state. The programme ended with the vote of thanks by Dr. Vinay Singh, Scientist (Poultry Science) of ICAR, Tripura Centre. In this programme, 690 poultry birds (one month old) developed at ICAR, Tripura Centre, Lembucherra and 100 kg poultry feed were distributed among 69 tribal women. The event created huge enthusiasm among the farmers and thus brought a great impact on farming community in the locality.

The programme was sponsored by Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) Project, ICAR.
