AGARTALA, May 27 (TIWN): Mizoram govt. has finally agreed to take back all the tribal refugees sheltering in Tripura for the past 18 years. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh early this year had visited the Kanchanpur refugee camps and has taken the stock of the situation. With the decks cleared for repatriation for the Bru refugees, the identification of those Bru refugees in the relief camps who were enrolled in the Mizoram voters' lists would begin from June 2, said an official of Kanchanpur on Wednesday. Talking to TIWN the official said that the identification of the refugees would be processed in two phases. He also said that the repatriation process of the bru refugees would commence from mid-June. During the first phase the refugees enrolled in Mizoram voter lists would be identified whereas during the second phase those who claimed to be actual residents of the state but were not included in the voters' lists would be identified, said the officer. The identification and actual repatriation would be conducted from Kaskau relief camp, the nearest one from the Mizoram border. The official on Wednesday told to TIWN that several meeting were held in rgard of the repatriation of the bru refugees and at last it was finalised that the process would commence from the middle of June, 2015 and would be completed likely by September.

Brus refugees taking shelter for the past 18 years in Tripura Kanchanpur bordering area would be repatriated from the six relief camps in North Tripura district following a meeting between Mizoram and Tripura government officials.

A tripartite meeting was held earlier this month between the officials of Tripura and Mizoram governments and refugee leaders and has decided to repatriate the refugees from Tripura to Mizoram. There are 5,286 tribal families comprising 31,223 men, women and children sheltered in seven camps in Kanchanpur and Panisagar sub-divisions under North Tripura district adjoining Mizoram.

It is worthy to mention here that during the previous year around 300 refugees sheltered in Tripura since 1997 have returned to Mizoram whereas another large number of refugees who called themselves as ‘Bru’ refused to go back to Mizoram as their demands had not yet been fulfilled. They alleged that the Mizoram govt. had failed to fulfil their demands of separate autonomous body along with others.

Bru refugees staying in camps of North Tripura have demanded an independent inquiry by the Union ministry of home affairs (MHA) into the conditions of the families who have gone back before the next of phase of repatriation begins.

Clash between Migrants and Non-tribal in Kanchanpur and other areas where the refugees were residing became a common problem nowadays. Besides that the law and order situation is also facing hard troubles like the growing up of militant organization like BNA, BDEM, and NDLFM is becoming active. Other than that it had also disturbed the environmental balance also.

Though the State government had taken the matter in to the notice of Mizoram Government, but in that case, the Mizo Government, is playing step motherly attitude. They are not showing positive attitude to bring their citizens into their State. During the meeting at Delhi under the leadership of the Union Joint Secretary, Shambhu Singh, Tripura Government told Mizoram Government to provide some basic things to the Reang Refugees. But, no steps had been taken till now from their end. The Mizo Government was also instructed to return back their people within June 30th, 2015.
