Governor Tathagata Roy's appointment brings hope to masses against CPI-M misrule

AGARTALA, May 20 (TIWN): 70 year old civil engineer turned politician appointed by the President of India Pranab Mukharjee, Tathagata Roy on Wednesday sworn in as Governor of Tripura at Raj Bhawan, oath administered by Tripura High Court Chief Justice Deepak Gupta. Roy assumed his office as a Governor amidst political threatening to stir “If the new governor crosses his constitutional limit, the CPI-M would launch a mass movement against him”.

Governor Tathagata Roy's appointment brought cheers across state as people are hopeful that corruption tainted rule under present CPI-M govt will come to an end in 2018.

Chief Minister Manik Sarkar alongwith his cabinet ministers, political parties of the state and other state administrative officers alongwith army officials, police officers remained present during the swearing in ceremony programme at Raj Bhawan.

President of India Pranab Mukharjee on May 12 appointed 70-year-old Roy, a former president of the BJP's West Bengal unit Tathagata Roy, as the 16th governor of Tripura.

Tathagata Roy son of Lt. Debesh Chandra Roy was born on September 14, 1945 at Kolkata. Roy was a member of Bharatiya Jatana Party (BJP) national executive and president of party's West Bengal unit from 2002 to 2006 and contested the Lok Sabha elections in the last year's parliamentary polls in Bengal.

With the opposition political parties of the Left ruled state comprising of Congress, BJP and others welcomed Tathagata Roy, the ruling CPI-M State Secretary Bijan Dhar reacting sharply to the appointment said, “If the new governor crosses his constitutional limit, the CPI-M would launch a mass movement against him”.

Besides, BJP state president Sudhindra Das Gupta on Tuesday night talking to TIWN rubbished the statement of CPI-M against Roy said, “The emerging popularity of the BJP here in the Left ruled state worrying the ruling CPI-M at large.”

Das Gupta also said that Roy is not the first political leader who has been appointed as a Governor of Tripura, as earlier another Congress leader had assumed his office as a Governor of the state.

Immediately after his arrival here in the state, Tathagata Roy invited chief Minister Manik Sarkar to the Raj Bhavan to discuss several issues of the state.
