Kalamchoura / Sepahijala, May 15 (TIWN): Smuggling of cows throughout the porous India- Bangladesh border is going on unabetted over the years and the recent addition of some new businessmen have given a flare up to the illegal trade.

Though the fencing work along the India-Bangladesh border is nearing completion, some areas still remains unfenced throughout the 856 km India – Bangladesh border in the state, enabling smugglers to use the area as a heaven for such illegal activities.

Smuggling of various commodities across the state’s international border with neighbouring Bangladesh was a major concern for the country’s economy and the menace was brought under curtailment after the erection of fencing along the India- Bangladesh border in different bordering states of the country like West Bengal, Meghalaya, Assam, Tripura and Mizoram.

But the fencing work was halted in some places throughout the various states due to diverse local reasons and the unfenced areas are posing threat to the country’s internal security, economy and population imbalance.

The bonhomie of some corrupt police officials under the corruption ridden Manik Sarkar Govt.  with the smugglers in the state is giving a free run to the smugglers in carrying out their illegal trade through the border.

The recent flare up in cow smuggling through the porous Kalamchoura area  is a matter of much concern. Everyday hundreds of cows are being smuggled through the Kalamchoura border which is bringing an imbalance in the total cattle population of the state. It may mentioned here that the cows are one of the main sources of organic fertilizer for the agriculture of the state and the smuggling of the cows to Bangladesh is only destroying the main source of organis fertilizer, claims experts in the fields of agricultural science here.

According to sources in the smuggling fraternity, a section of the police is giving safe passage to the smuggled cows towards the Kalamchoura border in return of hefty amount.

“The business remains unchecked with the close tie ups of a section of the police personnel in the state police department and the police are always safeguarding us in return of lakhs of rupees”, claims the source.
