AGARTALA, May 15 (TIWN): A total of 1000 Metric Ton (MT) of rice from Bangladesh arrived at Agartala Integrated Check Post (ICP), said official source on Thursday. However the source confirmed that the rice would be ferried from ICP on May 14. During the last two months a total of 40, 000 MT of rice entered in Tripura.

A total of 15 trucks would carry the rice from ICP. Train services in Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram and southern Assam have been suspended from last October for track conversion from meter gauge to broad gauge being undertaken by the Northeast Frontier Railways and scheduled to end March 2016 in two phases.

However talking to the official source in regard of any disturbance in the stock of rice here in the state, the source said that due to the uninterrupted political unrest in the neighbouring country Bangaladesh, less volume of rice are arriving here as a result the state might face crisis in stock.

Besides, during the last one month only 40, 000 MT of rice has been ferried here. Despite the unrest in Bangladesh, after a several halt the ferry of rice in Tripyra has yet again started.

The Centre has asked Bangladesh for extending the facility of ferrying rice for Tripura by using its waterways and the Ashuganj river port of the neighbouring country near the state capital until the conversion work gets completed.

The state govt. here has also stressed on a buffer stock of rice in Tripura, but the current unrest situation in Bangladesh has put hurdle to it.
