AGARTALA, May 13 (TIWN): After Central Govt's nod and santion of Rs 300 crores here for Flyover project in Agartala city, a much long awaited foundation stone of the Agartala flyover would be laid on May 27, 2015, said PWD Minister Badal Chowdhury on Wednesday. Minister alongwith PWD Engineer in-chief Sunil Bhowmik and other officials visited the site at Dropgate and Bordowali area where the foundation stone would be laid. Speaking to the reporters during the site inspection Minister Badal Chowdhury said, “The first ever flyover here in Agartala city would be one of the historical momentum for the state as well as for the North eastern region.” Chowdhury mentioned that there would be no further delay of the construction work as there are no other problems left with the department. “The foundation stone of the project work would be laid on May 27 this year,” Chowdhury said on Wednesday. He also said that funds are available with the department as now Rs. 300 crores has been sanctioned. Nagarjuna Construction Company has been assigned to take up the project work. The department has targeted the work to be completed by 3 years from now, said Chowdhury. As the Nagarjun Construction Ltd’s bid among others was found lowest bid, the department has approved the company to undertake the construction work of the fly over, which would connect Drop Gate to Fire Brigade Chowmuhani via Battala.

The flyover, which will start from Drop Gate (Fire Service office) is scheduled to touch Fire Brigade Chowmuhani via Battala. A subway of the fly over will be created upto Melarmath. As per the layout of the project, the Banayan tree and the temple at Battala will be remained untouched by the fly over. However it is worthy to be mentioned here that earlier the PWD department had shortlisted construction agencies - L&T (Larsen & Toubro), ITD Cementation Ltd., and NCP constructions Pvt. Ltd. and a pre-bid meeting was held on January 28 with them.

The first ever 2-lane flyover in the capital city will lower the traffic jam by at least 40% to 45% and it will make a smooth fast track movement of the vehicles.

The entire structure will be constructed on single-row pillars. As many as 100 pillars will cover the 2.5 km fly over. Once fly over is constructed, vehicles from the Nagerjala bus stand will continue to ply on the same path. It means the vehicles leaving Nagerjala will not be allowed to catch the fly over to avoid traffic congestion, said the officials.
