Aftershock of tremor hits Tripura again with epicenters in Nepal, Afghanistan

AGARTALA, May 12 (TIWN): Three aftershock earthquake hits Tripura on Tuesday. The earthquake measuring 7.3 on Richter scale shook most of the parts of the state on 12:35 p.m., 1:15 p.m. at 5.4 on Richter scale, while another earthquake shook the state on 1:45 p.m. at 6.2 on Richter scale. However there is no report of causalities or damage of property. The IMD officials said that the epicenter of the earthquake was in Nepal.

IMD official stated after any high intensity earthquake has the probability of lot of moderate aftershock around the epicenter. The aftershock is for settling the earth and deep earth plates, this located during any high intensity tremor.

Three earthquakes one measuring 7.3, 6.2 with epicenter in Nepal and another 5.4 quake in Afghanistan struck north India on Tuesday, triggering a massive panic.

The fresh earthquakes rocked the entire northeastern India and adjoining areas on Tuesday, an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said.

"A major intensity earthquake measuring 7.3 on Richter scale shook most parts of northeastern states and Nepal, Myanmar and Bangladesh," said the IMD official.

Strong tremors and aftershocks were felt in north and east India, including New Delhi, Srinagar, Amritsar, Guwahati, Lucknow and Jaipur. The Delhi Metro services were promptly halted in the national capital.

"The tremors were also felt in most of the eastern states, Bangladesh and Myanmar," the official said.

Disaster management control rooms of Tripura, Mizoram and other states in mountainous northeast said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property.

The northeastern region, comprising eight hilly states, is considered the sixth major earthquake-prone belt (zone five) in the world.
