FIR lodged against husband for burning housewife alive, no arrest yet

AGARTALA, May 9 (TIWN): Tripura gradually emerges as the unsafe and un-protective place for the women. Every day the number of crime incidents upon women is increasing alarmingly. In yet another incident of atrocities on women, a housewife was allegedly burnt alive at Bijoynagar area in Mohanpur sub-division on May 5.

According to police, the deceased was identified as Rupali Das. It was learnt that Manik Das of Bijoynagar area under Mohanpur sub-division had tied the knot with Rupali Das of East Kalabari under Belonia sub-division 12 years back. They have a 10-year-old son, who stays with his grandmother at Belonia.

 Phulurani Das, the mother of the victim, alleged that Rupali had to tolerate an unendurable torture by her husband Manik Das since the wedding on regular basis. Phulurani Das said that an argument took place between Manik and Rupali on May 5.

During the argument Manik Das turned violent and set Rupali on fire. As a result, major portion of the body of housewife was burnt. After getting the information locals rushed to the house of victim and shifted her to GBP hospital on the same night of incident. However, the victim succumbed to her burn injuries at GBP hospital on May 6.

The mother of the victim has lodged an FIR at GB police outpost alleging that Rupali was allegedly killed by her husband. But police have failed to detain the accused husband.  

Data released by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) also tell that every second day a woman is raped in Tripura (as of 2012) with the figure of202 rape cases in 2012 alone. Though the number has seen a downfall from 258 in 2011 but during the period from2001 to 2012, this number is seventh most worst. The year which had least rape cases during the said period is 2003 with 135. Along with that, the atrocities on the women folk in the names of kidnapping and abduction is numbered as 120 in 2012 with a rising trend as 106 in 2010 and 113 in 2011. The regional disparity is a sheer instance of shame for Tripura as 87 deaths have occurred, last year, due to dowry .While neighboring state Nagaland having not a single such death, as informed by the data source of Open Government Data (OGD) platform of India, maintained by Department of States of Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India.

Additionally, an alarming 375 cases were reported as regards assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty. 1147 cases were reported under the head Cruelty by Husband or his relatives (Under IPC 498A), in the year 2012.Not only the serious crimeslike murders and women related crimes but the Police have also performed poorly when it comes to safeguarding the properties of people. A mere less than 35 % success rate has been registered.

Though Tripura has recorded marginal fall in the crime against women though of the total cases registered with police about 46.05 per cent are women related cases.tripura-records-fall-in-crime-against-women but after that the torture on women increased alarmingly. On the other hand in the recent period, , a whopping 1,582 cases of rape and other crimes against women had been registered with 71 police stations and 35 police outposts. Out of altogether 3,771 people named as accused in complaints with the police, 2,342 had been arrested.

According to the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), Tripura had India’s worst crime rate against women: 46.5 per lakh population in 2010. Between April 2010 and March 2011, the Tripura Commission for Women (TCW) received 913 cases of crime against women, out of which 62 were against tribals.
