KAILASHAHAR, April 29 (TIWN): Keeping the police stations in ‘yawning-siesta’, illegal trade of fake currencies has alarmingly gripped the entire Unakoti district for over past few months. A strong racket very actively supplying fake notes in the district but the district administration remained mum over the issue, said a local source.

Sometime back in Unakoti district when the police department had conducted random operations to combat the supply of fake notes, said source. Leaving space for the fake currency racket, surprisingly, the police department has stopped carrying out such drives for past few months in Unakoti district.

A section of fake currency smugglers are supplying a huge amount of fake notes in the different parts of the Unakoti district along with the other places in Tripura, said the source. Asked about the issue, a senior police officer from Unakoti district said, “After the rising of the barbed wire fencing in the entire border with Bangladesh, a section earlier involved in smuggling of goods and cattle is now turning towards supplying fake notes and other valuable amount but of small size which can be easily smuggled despite of the fence.”

“Now the smugglers have framed new strategy of smuggling. They are making small packets of profitable items like currency notes, marijuana and medicines and throw them above the fence at places where visibility is low”, he said. But despite of all efforts police and border guards are keeping a vigil and the rate of successful operations of the security forces are high, he added.
