Overnight monsoon rain creates havoc in Tripura, power supply disrupted

AGARTALA, April 21 (TIWN): Life was thrown out of gear at several low lying areas, including the capital town, in Tripura following the heavy monsoonal rains on Monday night. Overnight seasonal rains accompanied by a thunder storm also disrupted power supply and surface transport movement besides damaging a large number of houses in Tripura especially in the rural regions.

Damage to more than 100 houses, crops and vehicles was also reported in incidents of lightning strike accompanied by heavy rains. A large part of Tripura remained in darkness after power transmission lines snapped.

The rain along with a thundering storm has also uprooted hundreds of trees and telephone and electricity poles and triggered panic among the people of the state. No serious casualties have fortunately been reported from anywhere, however.

Engineers and workers have been working round-the-clock to restore both electric supply and vehicular movement in Tripura.

According to the officials of meteorological department said that the seasonal Nor'wester (cyclonic rainstorm) would continue till this monsoon. The recurring Nor'wester is now active in entire eastern and northeast India and a few other places in the country.Communication was disrupted till today morning due to landslide in several parts in the North district and other parts.

Life and business has been largely affected due to power cuts enforced for hours recently.Though getting respite from the scorching heat, heavy rains crippled normal life. Within 24 hours of heavy downpour across the state disrupted electricity connections in few areas. Power was disrupted in few areas like Dukli, Badharghat, Milanchakra, Milanshangha, Battala and other places of the capital city and the rural Tripura creating problem for the people.

Storm hit various remote areas grounding several electric pillars. The storm caused huge damage to the electricity transmission line in different areas. Several electric pillars were uprooted after trees fell into transmission line. Electric poles were uprooted in the squalls, affecting the movement of vehicles in the cyclone-affected rural areas along with the capital city.
