AGARTALA, April 21 (TIWN): It’s a fact that 49 percent of families in the state lacks hygienic toilets according to latest report of Drinking Water & Sanitation department. Every year crores of rupees are given by center to the state government to construct hygienic toilet under ‘ Nirmal Bharat Abhijaan’, still 90 percent of rural areas are not having hygienic toilets. The state tops in literacy in the country, percentage of votes casted is top in the country and CPI(M) government policy is to create a balance between rural and urban area of the state. Chief Minister and his council of minister claim that socio – economic condition of people in the state have improved, the reality is all claims are just lip services.
The two main rivers Gomati and Howrah is getting polluted due to lack of hygiene toilets, all major town including the states capital is dependent on this rivers for drinking water
According to WHO lack of sanitation can lead to contaminated drinking water, which is especially dangerous for children. Not having access to safe sanitation is also one of the top reasons why girls do not go on with schooling once they hit puberty.
The state governments should be held accountable when it comes to keeping their promises about sanitation access. They also called for more education when it comes to sanitation, including hygiene promotion programs and proper menstrual hygiene classes as part of school curriculum.
