BELONIA, March 30 (TIWN): 5th women police station of the state was inaugurated today at Belonia under South District, with Director General of Police (DG) K. Nagaraj. Alongwith DGP, SP South Bhanupada Chakroborty, Dakhin Zilla Sabhadipati Himangshu Roy, DIG (Southern Sector) Uttam Majumder and other senior officials remained present. The women police station at the Belonia at present consists of a total of 22 staffs with Officer-in-charge Mofru Mog Choudhuri and 3 sub inspectors. Addressing the inauguration programme today, DG K. Nagaraj said that the crimes against women are rampant at Belonia with more than 50% as compared to other areas under the South district. Adding to that Nagaraj stated that the women police station at Belonia and other areas of the state will make it much easier and comfortable for the women of the state to lodge complaints against any untoward incidents occuring to them. DGP Nagaraj said that the state govt. and its police administration had achieved a major success in curtailing the insurgency problems at the state.

And that too with the cooperation of the common mass of the state.

He also stressed that yet the police succeeded to bring the insurgency and extremist problems under control but still at present some of the banned militant outfits are active in state to create terror.

Besides, DG K. Nagaraj also mentioned that there is a direction from the central govt. to set up a model Police station at the state here. “Therefore if the central govt. sanctioned proposed funds, we have a plan to set up the model PS here at Belonia,” Nagaraj said.

However, the Belonia women police station was set up covering a distance of 60 km. the Belonia sub division under the South district at present consisted of 1 lakh and 20 thousands population, with 27 Gram Panchayat.

However, it is mentionable here that Chief Minister Manik Sarkar earlier said that currently, 13 percent of the total police constables and ten percent of the total police force are women. State government's target is to raise the percentage to 30. The Tripura government has already set-up five women police stations and five more women police stations would be set-up soon. It was only this month that 300 women constables had joined the Tripura Police after completion of nine-month training. Trained in the KTD Singh Police Academy at Narsingarh, about 15 kms from the state capital, these 300 women who were aged between 18 and 27 years, also had 86 from the tribal communities.

The number of crimes against women has gone up in Tripura in recent years, with the Crimes ‘in India ‘report for 2013 published by National Crime Records Bureau (NCB) showing that number of rape cases increased from 229 in 2012 to 233 in 2013.
