AGARTALA, March 22 (TIWN): Thousands of residents of Jampui Hill, under the North Tripura covering 12 Mizo dominated villages are all set to stage agitation in demand of a long cherished dream of Jampui hill regional council. The decades long demand which had started in 1981 under Mizo convention, a lushai community organization withered due to internal conflicts and went in deep slumber for the last two decades.

Of late, the demands of regional council got momentum under the leadership of L. Sailo. The top leaders of Mizo convention are waiting for the response from Governor of Tripura and accordingly have sought appointment to discuss the issue. However, if the response comes positive, then Jampui Hill, once known as “Switerland of Tripura” for its picturesque will maintain its peace and tranquility on contrary if the response is negative then Jampui may witness democratic agitation as long as the demand is not met.

It is mentionable that the inhabitants of Jampui Hill have been struggling for identity crisis along with other sorts of problem that are not yet solved successfully.

Drinking water crisis, communication, lack of security over the Reang refugee problem and poor development always greet them with the crisis of cultural identity and existence. The decades long demand motive is to provide regional council status under the provision of 6 schedule of Indian Constitution with an intension to preserve cultural heritage. Leaders of Mizo convention said that during the tenure of the Late Nripen chakroborty, the then Chief Minister of Tripura, the Mizo convention leaders were assured for regional council followed by assurances from the government of Tripura lead by Late Sudhir Majumder (Congress).

However, observing the attitude of the ruling govt. here many leaders withdrew their demand and went to a deep slumber. But as the demand which still persists in the mind of the Jampui Hillers, the issue again raised up and this time the Mizo convention might go to extreme struggle with a protest to meet their demand soon.
