Northeast is India's economic corridor, says DoNER Minister; MP Jiten highlights Tripura in Northeast Business summit

NEW DELHI / AGARTALA, March 15 (TIWN) Describing the northeast as the "economic corridor of India", Minister of State for Development of the Northeastern Region (DoNER) Jitendra Singh on Saturday asked leaders of the business community to become active participants in its development. He said ever since he was entrusted the responsibility of looking after the DoNER ministry, he has learnt that in a country like India known for its diversity, northeast is the best example of "diversity within diversity". MP Jitendra Chaudhury, Chairman, TIDC has chaired a Session of "Exclusive Investors Meet", where Chief Minister of Sagaing Region of Myanmer, Vijay Kumar, Secretary DoNER, M.K.Saharia, President of ICC(North East, representative of about 25 Business Houses and experts of Trade & Industries had interacted.

In his concluding remarks Jiten Chaudhury said Government of India should act upon on the ground instead of merely making lofty statements of improving the connectivity of the region.DoNER Minister was addressing the inaugural session of the Northeast Business Summit hosted by the ministry in collaboration with Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) here.

Tripura MP said, "There should be a master plan to connect all the important destinations of North East within a time frame  with rest of the country and vis a vis the South Asian countries through rail, road, waterways and tele communication. Visa, customs and excise etc. regimes should be re-visited such a way that the South Asian countries do really could dwell upon with dreams of the 21st century".
While interacting with the investors MP Jiten Chaudhury has appealed to the prospective investors to physically visit Tripura and ride on the built infrastructures and opportunities available. He has claimed Tripura is one of the best destinations in the region for its surplus power, available infrastructure, being the number one State of the country in literacy, effort for multi-disciplined skill upgradation  programmes, peace tranquility and for its clean governance. Many of the investors and trade agencies present in the summit has also appreciated the prevailing business friendly atmosphere of Tripura.

Senior government representatives from Bangladesh, Bhutan and Myanmar are participating in this summit. Referring to several new initiatives undertaken by him, Singh said beginning from January this year, he has introduced the practice of holding a camp secretariat office by rotation every month in each of the eight states of northeast.

This, he said, will send out a loud message to the people of northeast that they do not need to travel to New Delhi each time when they have a grievance.

Inspired by the prime minister's "Make in India" initiative, the minister said, a concept paper titled "Make in Northeast" has been prepared and he is personally trying to reach out to industrial houses to promote organic farming and food processing which will generate revenue as well as employment in the region.

He appealed to leaders of the business community, including ICC, to become active participants in this initiative and to inspire potential investors and entrepreneurs to supplement the DoNER ministry's efforts in the region.

"This will not only help in promoting industry and business but will also bridge the psychological barriers and bring northeast closer to mainstream India's brisk march on the road to development and growth", he observed.

The meet was inaugurated by Dr. Jitendra Singh, MoS(Ind. Charge), DoNER. The other dignitaries attended and has taken part in the deliberations are Suresh Prabhu, Union Railways Minister, Ashok Gajapati Raju, Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Kiren Rijiju, MoS, Home Affairs, Alhaz Amir Hossain Amu, Industry Minister of Bangladesh, Mr.U. Thar Aye, Chief Minister of Sagaing Region of Myanmar, Mr. Aung Zan, Minister of Planning & Economy of Madalaya Region of Myammar, Mr. Lyonpo Tandin Wangchuk, Health Minister of Bhutan, Commerce Minister of Japan, High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India, High Commissioner of India to Myanmer, Ministers in charge of Commerce & Industry of NE States, officials of different Ministries of Govt. of India and NE States, and large number of representatives from Trade & Commerce. Tripura was represented by Sri Jitendra Chaudhury, MP and Chairman of Tripura Industrial Development Corporation Ltd.

In inaugurating the summit Dr. Jitendra Singh, MoS, DoNER has said, considereing the diversities within the diversities and amid huge potentials of the region Government of India shall reorient its whole strategy for overall development of the region and shall implement its Act East policy. He added, in every month DoNER shall set up its camp Secretariate in the capital of  one of the eight NE States by rotationally, in every fortnight on of the Central Ministers shall visit the region and assured to explore best possible mechanism to engage the other part of India with North East and India with neighbouraing countries through North East.
Alhaz Amir Hussain Amu, the Industry Minister of Bangladesh has urged for better infrastructure to be created at either sides of the border, to further examine how the different tarriff and non-tariff barriers could be simplified, particularly looking at the potentialities of NE States and South Asian countries together and stated that Bangladesh is very keen to establish trans asian networks of highways and waterways. He has further stated Bangladesh is going to establish two new Consuler Office of Dy. High Commissioner level in India at Guwahatii and Chennai and Agartala Mission shall be upgraded soon.
Mr. U.Thar Aye, Chief Minister of Sagaing Region of Myanmar has emphasised for improving the connectivities, open Trade routes through Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram as the the region has long boundaries with this three States of India.
Ashoke Gajapati Raju and Suresh Prabhu, both the Union Ministers has admitted that huge investment is required to improve the connectivity and their ministries shall work on that, which is one of the key impediments for the backwardness of the region.
