AGARTALA, March 8 (TIWN): The left front bannered campaign for women empowerment, equal rights for women in every sphere of life, ensuring security for the women of the state had completely failed to reduce the crime against women here in Tripura, said Mohila Congress President Kalyani Rai today at Agartala Congress Bhawan.

She alleged that in most of the cases the accused are found to be the core hand of the CPI (M) party, while the police here in Tripura acting on behest of the left front govt. washes their hand from the case in order to lead an easy pathway for the accused.

As part of the celebration if the International Women’s Day the Tripura Mohila Congress today organized a seminar and a panel discussion programme at Agartala Congress Bhawan. “The Home department and its minister failed to take any stern steps against crime against women. Chief Minister who also holds the portfolio of Home Minister in the state, is the sole responsible person for such grave escalation of the state-of-affairs”, alleged Mohila Congress President Kalyani Rai today talking to TIWN. The seminar today at Congress Bhawan intended to sensitise people against child marriage and female infanticide and to highlight the importance of equal opportunities for women, women education and prevention of domestic violence against women, said Rai.

However, it may be recalled here that an official record confirmed that a total of 840 cases related to crime against women were registered by January this year. Out of the total, 544 cases related to dowry death were lodged at different police stations across the state. Cases lodged related to gang rape were 13 in 2014-15. The rate was 14 in 2013-14 rising from 11 registered in the previous financial year. However, the record shows less incidents of minor rape in 2014-15 compared to the last two consecutive years. The number of crimes against women has gone up in Tripura in recent years, with the Crimes ‘in India’report for 2013 published by National Crime Records Bureau (NCB) showing that number of rape cases increased from 229 in 2012 to 233 in 2013. Likewise, the number of cases of kidnapping and abduction of women and girls has gone up from 114 in 2012 to 124 in 2013. Tripura had also registered 29 incidents of dowry deaths and 827 cases of cruelty by husband and his relatives during 2013, the NCRB report had said.

Therefore to mention here, organising seminars, workshops and awareness camp and recruiting more women police on curbing the rising crimes against women must not be enough here in the state at present because the way it has taken a giant shape, it is possible to curb the crimes related to women only if the state govt. here awakes from a deep slumber and takes necessary steps against the accused
