Agartala/ Sonamura, Mar 5 (TIWN): In an order to ensure border dominance, barbed wire fencing works for over 7 km unfenced areas which are stalled for long time due to various reasons including local objections, were started within 150 yards from zero line at Balerdepa village under Sonamura sub-division here on wednesday.

To start the border fencing works for 300 meters area in Balerdepa village, a joint team led by SDM (Sonamura) Panna Ahmed was present in the place of work.

SDPO (Sonamura)- Ashok Kumar Sinha, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sonamura police station- Narayan Saha, Coy Commanders of Srimantapur and Dhanpur BOPs, troops of BSF, TSR and a vast number of police personnel were also present there in the work place.

The day was ended in peaceful atmosphere except few sporadic incidents. As many as 31 pillars made by iron were installed in 50 meter unfenced boundary. Of the total 84 kilometers international boundary with Bangladesh, 7 to 8 km remained unfenced.

The villagers tried to raise objections in the morning with a demand to set up wire fencing at the zero line of Indo-Bangla border. But the joint team led by SDM Panna Ahmed simply informed that the barbed wire fencing will be done inside 150 yards from zero line of the Indo-Bangla international borderline along Tripura frontiers.

The villagers were informed that the Border Guards of Bangladesh (BGB) allowed barbed wire fencing inside 150 yards from zero line.

At the same time, a section of local residents staged protest on Sonamura-Kathalia road saying that they did not receive compensation for the acquired land.

Referring the issue, the SDM said, “It is not true that the administration did not offer compensation to them. An amount of total Rs. 4500 was approved by the administration; only two-three persons of a family are yet to receive the amount.”
