Concept of ‘Jal Gram’ proposed in workshop-cum-seminar on ‘Hamara Jal, Hamara Jeewan’

Agartala, March 3 (TIWN): With the initiative of Public Works Department (Water Resource) a workshop-cum-seminar on the theme ‘Hamara Jal, Hamara Jeewan’ was conducted at Sukanta Academy here today. The workshop was organized in association with the Union Ministry of Water Resource and Cultural Ground Water Board (CGWB).

 Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC)- Dr. Prafullajit Sinha, Sabhadipati of West Tripura Zilla Parishad- Dilip Das, District Magistrate (DM) and Collector, West Tripura- Abhishek Singh and many other dignitaries attended the seminar.

In the workshop, a concept of ‘Jal Gram’ was proposed. It is proposed to select at least one ‘Jal Gram’ in each district for taking up water conservation and water security schemes through convergence of existing programmes such as Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP), Repair, Renovation and Restoration (RRR) of water bodies, National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP), National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) on aspects of water quality and rural water supply programme.

According to the concept, the proposal of Jal Gram can be considered as pilot project under National Water Mission (NWM) which main objective is; conservation of water, minimizing wastages and ensuring its more equitable distribution both across and within the state through integrated water resources development  and management.

The key strategies of the project are; revival of traditional sources for water conservation an utilization, selected interventions for maintaining water quality standards, promotion of social regulation of water for meeting the demand of water for various purposes especially for agriculture and promotion of appropriate technologies for efficient and sustainable use of rainwater and old and new ground water schemes.
