De-worming pills left more than 111 students ill at Kailasahar and Kumarghat on Thrusday: 95% students discharged; People losing faith in State Heath Care

KAILASAHAR, February 12 (TIWN): Teachers and Parents rushing to hospitals at Kailasahar and Kumarghat, as many as 111 school children fell ill after they were administered de-worming doses as part of National De-worming programme at the schools. The ailing students were rushed to the local hospitals with most of them complaining severe stomach ache accompanied with frequent vomiting and other symptoms. Around 95% students amongst them has already been discharged with the rest undergoing treatment at the hospital. After a mayhem at Dharmanagar sub division on Wednesday following the illness of more than 162 school children due to the de-worming doses, today another 100+ school children of Kailasahar Kubjhar school and Kumarghat SB School fell ill after they were administered with the de-worming doses. All of them were immediately taken to the local hospital and later most of them were discharged after the primary treatment. And the rest are expected to get discharged by Thursday night. Still State Health Dept is in dark about this mysterious ill effects of de-worming doses.

 However, the concerned administration has taken ceratin steps to examine the matter and to conduct sample tests at the labaratory. “So far no students has been found in critical condition”, said the administration. 
Following the incident today the concerned administration along with the school inspector visited the school where the students were administered with the pills. The administrration had expressed their displeasure over the process carried by the school authorities to administer the pills. They said the students were supposed to be administered with the pills after the mid day meal only, but the students were administerd with the pills on their empty stomach. Besides, the de-worming pills does have a minor side effects, said the administration.
 
It may be recalled here that recently Health Minister Badal Chowdhury said that the state wide campaign programme as part of the De-worming day  will cover eight districts of the state in first phase and about 16 lakhs children will be targeted in this phase.
In schools, teachers would provide one albendazole tablet to enroll children recording the same in the register. Also, Anganwadi workers would provide albendazole dose to all children between 1-5 years and out-of-school children or adolescents and record it in the register.
