Agartala, Feb 12 (TIWN):Mizoram’s Reang tribal refugees living in Tripura for the last 17 years have been neglected by both the central and state governments, Revenue Minister Badal Chowdhury said here today.
“The Reang tribal refugees are willing to return their homes in Mizoram. The future of the thousands of their children in refugee camps is being ruined,” he told at assembly.

Criticising both the Mizoram government and the centre for the stalemate in repatriating the refugees, he said: “Though the tribals have been languishing in the camps for more than 17 years, no serious positive steps were taken by the centre or the Mizoram government to end the uncertainity of their lives.”
“Tripura government  has been asking to take immediate steps to take back the refugees as the long stay of the tribals in north Tripura creats serious socio-economic problems,” Sarkar said.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Minister of State (Home) Kiren Rijuju will visit Tripura on Saturday to review the law and order situation and discuss the repatriation of Reang refugees, housed in six evacuee camps in the state, said the revenue minister.
The Union Home Minister would arrive here by chopper from Imphal and then again fly by chopper for Khanthlang border outpost, a remote area in Kanchanpur subdivision of North Tripura district to hold meeting with BSF officers.
From Khanthlang he would visit the evacuee camps of the internally displaced Reangs from neighbouring Mizoram and then return to Agartala to hold meeting with Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and Mizoram Chief Minister Lalthanhawla at the Civil Secretariat. The Union Home Minister would return to Delhi on the same day.
Over 34,000 Reang tribals, locally called Bru, have been living in six camps in Kanchanpur since 1997. They fled western Mizoram after ethnic clashes with the majority Mizos following the killing of a Mizo forest official.
The Reangs are a very primitive tribal group among the tribals in the northeast region of India, comprising eight states. The tribals constitute 26.93 percent of the northeast’s total population of over 3.8 crore (2001 census).
