AGARTALA, Sep 8 (TIWN): An employee is not supposed to sleep during "night duty" and before they agree to do the night-hours job and sign the paper --- they sign it after acknowledging the fact that they can not sleep during duty-hours but for generations, nurses have been sleeping in Tripura government hospitals during night times and in some government hospitals, nurses switch off the ward's lights, threaten the patients to stay silent as it's their sleeping time.

All these nonsense activities are now to end! Under Dr. Manik Saha's government, the hospital services remain tight, and now GB hospital has decided to remove all the beds that are illegally used nurses.

Expectedly, the same will be followed in other hospitals shortly. For now, GB hospital senior doctor Shankar Chakraborty has confirmed that during a meeting held recently, it was decided that all the beds used by nurses will be removed from the wards so that nurses can fully dedicate their service hours to patients.

WATCH : 'Hospital Beds are for Patients, not for on-duty employees'' : Dr. Sankar Chakraborty talked to the media.

"Beds are only for patients, not for employees. It is not expected that a person will be sleeping during duty hours," Chakraborty said.

''Patients will be lying on the floor and nurses on duty will be sleeping on beds --- it's not acceptable'', he added.

On being asked if there is any written order issued for that, the doctor said, "There is no need for written orders because there was never any such order that nurses would be sleeping on those beds.

''Those beds were taken from the government, showing the patients' needs. We never said they would be used for employees. Government did not sanction funds for beds for anyone except patients", he added.

"It was an irregularity which was going on, and to fix irregularities comes as part of our duty,'' he said. ''That's how the work culture would be fixed gradually.''

He added, only staff like doctors who are doing duties more than eight hours or residential doctors as interns ---- they can sleep, but only one person can sleep at a time, not multiple people.
