Tripura fails to utilize funds on ‘police modernization’

Agartala, Feb 10 ( TIWN): Reflecting poor show on fund utilization under central schemes, Tripura government has left a major portion of funds unspent this year under the crucial Police modernization programme.The government has performed badly in the implementation of much-needed revamping programme for state police despite seeking an extended role for it.
A whopping Rs 15.58 crore has remained unspent out of total funds of Rs 45.58 crore released by the Union government against last few year’ s. It was stated in Legislative Assembly during budget session that for modernization of police.
Under the scheme, funds are released every year to all states for procurement of vehicles, communication equipments, surveillance equipment, sophisticated weaponry, creating training infrastructure and construction of police stations, outposts and barracks.
Central Government has scantioned Rs 45.52 crore for financial year 2012 – 13, 2013 -14 and 31st December 2014. From the sanctioned amount, Rs 6.75 was spent for procuring motor vehicles for police, Rs 23.27 crore for infrastructure development and Rs 15.58 crore remains unspent.
As part of modernization plan, all police station would have CC cameras. Out of 71 police stations, cameras have already installed at seven police stations. In other will be installed in phase manner.
It was also stated that in last three years – 2012,2013 and 2014 police recovered various types of illegal fire arms from the state, which includes country made firearms – 132 and foreign made - 9.
