Agartala, July 24 (TIWN): The introduction of smart meters in West Pilak area of Jolaibari constituency has sparked controversy, with residents expressing frustration over exorbitant electricity bills. The smart meters have brought additional charges, including fixed charges, taxes, and fuel charges, which are significantly increasing the bill amount.
Many residents, who are daily wage earners, are finding it difficult to pay the bills, which are often higher than their consumption. Some have reportedly received bills exceeding ?1 lakh, which is unsustainable for them. The residents have come together to protest against the smart meters and have appealed to the local MLA and Electricity Minister to intervene and provide relief.
The situation has raised concerns about the impact of smart meters on low-income households and the need for a more transparent and fair billing system. The residents are hoping for a resolution to this issue, and it remains to be seen how the electricity department will address their concerns.
