AGARTALA, July 23 (TIWN): Higher Education Minister Kishore Barman visits MBB University. Newly appointed Tripura cabinet minister paid a visit to Maharaja Bir Bikram University, a government-controlled university in Tripura. Barman was appointed as a Tripura cabinet minister this month – on July 23rd, allocating him a crucial department in Dr. Manik Saha's cabinet. While visiting, Barman met senior professors, talked to the principal, and held a general meeting to understand the situation of the university and what needs to be worked on.
MBB University
MBB University was established on November 1, 2015, as an initiative to elevate the existing MBB college in the College Tila area of Tripura's capital city, Agartala. The institution prides itself on being the sole state-sponsored degree college competing with the central university. The University started with four departments, namely Public Administration, Bachelor of Library and Information Science, Applied Mathematics, and English in 2016. It added a Library & Information Science (MLISc) course in 2020 and M.A. in History in self-finance mode in 2022. The nomenclature of Public Administration and Applied Mathematics was changed to the Department of Political Science and Department of Mathematics, respectively, from the 2021-2022 academic session.
Areas of improvement
To compete with other state universities like Jadavpur University and Delhi University, MBB University has a long way to go. The lack of interest among academically inclined students in taking admission to a state university is one of the major causes why the university is still struggling to get the attention of academics. Public relations and marketing departments are also areas that need to be worked on. Extended funding, massive recruitment of permanent professors, inviting professors from other states, and giving marketing projects for university promotion can be the next steps of development.
Significance of Kishore Barman's visit
A massive enthusiasm was observed among the officials with Barman's visit. The higher education department has been neglected in the state. Degree education is not just to make professors and teachers for the future generation but also scientists. Kishore Barman was seen listening to everyone keenly, trying to understand the situation. Unlike many other ministers in the state, there was no urgency in Barman to talk to the media for his own publicity. No reaction came from him, as he was more busy inspecting the infrastructure and what the employees were saying. An overall report will be prepared by the office centering on the visit to decide what the next step should be.
Overall problems of Tripura Higher Education
Shortages of professors, lack of infrastructure, too much student politics, too many guest lecturers, and poor library situations are the main causes why degree colleges in the state have always been suffering. There are over 25 general degree colleges in Tripura, and approximately 25,000 students take admission in undergraduate degree programs every year. Out of these, a major part of those students wish to opt for post-graduate programs.
