AGARTALA, July 8 (TIWN): Communist Party of India (CPI-M), the major communist party in this country and state right now, extended its full support to the trade union called strike on July 9, which is on Wednesday. The CPI-M party, led by party top leaders and other senior leaders, has organized a rally in Agartala on Monday as a part of a statewide campaign for the strike. The trade unions – INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF, and UTUC have been supported by all the Leftist parties.

The key reason behind the strike is to raise 17 points of demand.

The 17-point demand is to be raised before Labour Minister Mansukh Mandavia, the workers' union forum said in its latest statement.

The strike is a part of a protest against the Government’s attitude towards the labor unions, alleging that the government has not been conducting the annual labor conference for the last 10 years.

The trade unions accused Modi Govt of attempting to impose four labor codes to weaken collective bargaining, to cripple unions' activities and to favour employers in the name of 'ease of doing business'.

Price hikes and unemployment are the two major reasons for the strike, accusing the Government of destroying the job sectors and uncontrolled price hikes in this country.

The trade union also blamed the Modi government for working in the interest of foreign and Indian corporations.

“Trade unions have been fighting against privatisation of public sector enterprises and public services, policies of outsourcing, contractorization and casualisation of workforce", a statement issued by the trade unions said.

The four labour codes that have been passed by the Parliament are meant to curb he rights of the union movement, blamed the agitating union group.

"We are demanding from the government to address unemployment, recruitments against sanctioned posts, creation of more jobs, increase in days and remuneration of MGNREGA workers and enactment of similar legislation for urban areas. But the government is busy imposing ELI (Employment Linked Incentive) scheme to incentives employers' instead," it stated.

It alleged that the government is depriving the youths of jobs by not providing them jobs and instead hiring the retired officials citing Railways, NMDC Ltd, steel sector, and teaching cadres amid “65% population is below the age of 35 years and the number of unemployed is maximum among those in the age group of 20 to 25 years.”
