Sepahijala, July 7 (TIWN): A case of alleged dowry death has come to light in Melaghar, Sipahijala district, where a young woman's family claims that the police are refusing to register a case despite overwhelming evidence.
Jannatul Ferdous, a 22-year-old woman from Ardalia village, was allegedly subjected to physical and mental torture by her husband and in-laws for dowry, which ultimately led to her death on July 2.
According to the family, Jannatul was married to Zakir Hossain of Melaghar's Bordhepa Telkajala area in 2022. Despite being given a bike and money by her parents, Jannatul was continuously tortured by her husband and in-laws, who demanded more dowry. The family's allegations paint a grim picture of dowry harassment, which seems to have been ignored by the local police.
The family claims that they approached the Melaghar police station three times to register a case, but the police refused to file an FIR, even going to the extent of threatening and intimidating them. Desperate for justice, the family approached the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Sipahijala district on Monday, submitting a written complaint against Jannatul's husband, Zakir Hossain, and his family members.
The SP's office has assured the family that the matter will be investigated, and action will be taken accordingly. The family has demanded strict action against the accused and has sought the intervention of the state's Chief Minister.
