AGARTALA, January 27 (TIWN): With a theme of coordinated border management, Agartala customs Division today observed International Customs day at Agartala Akhaura Integrated Check post (ICP). The members attended the event today said that an efficiency managed border will benefit the government’s clients – traders and travelers.

Government’s efficiency at the border will also result in fewer interventions concerning goods and people. These interventions usually targeted against high risk shipments and passengers while taking into consideration all border sector agencies risk mitigation criteria.

Talking during the programme today the members who attended the programme said that the coordinated border management represents an approach to manage border sharing involving public service agencies working across portfolio boundaries in a coordinated manner to achieve a shared goal thus providing a cohesive government response to the challenges of border management.

The introduction of any coordinated border management (CBM) approach not only requires strong political will in its favour, but the full involvement of the private sector. It is the private sector who will use the CBM system and ultimately be the judge of its success. It will also be the supplier of many of the services needed for implementation of CBM.

However it is mentionable here that the World Customs Organisation (WCO)  was established in 1952 as the customs cooperation council (CCC) is an independent intergovernmental body whose mission is to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of customs administration. The WCO represents at least 179 customs administrations across the globe that collectively process approximately 98% of world trade.

However, today, ICP head Debashish Nandi along with BBMC Assistant Professor Tushar Bindu Chakroborty, 195th BSF battalion Commandant Chitor Pal and others attended the programme.
