AGARTALA, January 23 (TIWN): Just ahead of Saraswati Puja consumers are feeling the pinch of rising prices of vegetables and fruits in the city. Vegetables and fruits have jumped 60-70 percent in the course of a week. The rise in the prices is attributed to the poor arrivals of vegetables, especially those vegetables from the Shillong and other centers.

Cauliflower, which cost Rs 20-30 per kg a week ago, now costs Rs 40- 50 in the retail market.

Cabbage prices have soared to Rs 35 per kg from Rs 20.

The price of bitter gourd has increased to Rs 45 per kg from Rs 30. Pointed gourd is being sold at Rs 50 per kg against Rs 30 before while capsicum is being sold at Rs 250, up from 200 earlier.
Because of the high rates in the wholesale markets in the City, small traders and vendors were not lifting stocks. This was another reason for the high prices in many parts, said a trader from the Battala vegetable market.
This is quite a usual phenomenon in the Saraswati Puja season every year. But this year, the rise in prices of essential commodities seems to have impacted on the purchasing power of people, said a trader of M.G bazaar.
