Agartala,January 20 (TIWN): In about 26 new public toilets will come up across Agartala city , with the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) having identified the sites during a recent survey. Besides the existing toilets will be renovated. A press statement issued by authority of AMC informed that on 18 January chief secretary G. K Rao along with urban development secretary Ashutosh Jindal and AMC commissioner Abhishek Chandra visited the proposed sites and directed speedy completion of all public toilets.

Senior councilor of AMC  Shyamal Dey said  the civic body had carried out a survey to identify sites for new public conveniences as well as existing complexes that need repair and maintenance work.

“We have identified 26 sites for new public toilets including  ladies toilets that will be constructed “ said Mr. Dey  adding that extra funds had been demanded from the government for the same.

The high court adopted suo motu case and passed order setting a  deadline for the state government to take an initiative to resolve the problem emanating from lack of adequate toilets for women in the state capital.

A division bench of the high court, comprising Chief Justice Deepak Kumar Gupta and Justice U.B. Saha, on October last year  directed the chief secretary of the state to submit the government’s plan of action for solving the problem to the high court latest by December 10.
