AGARTALA, January 19 (TIWN): The 37th Kokborok day was celebrated at Dasarath Deb Upajati Sanskriti Bikash Kendra, here today. Minister for Education Tapan Chakraborty inaugurated the programme.
Addressing in the inaugural ceremony Minster Tapan Chakraborty said that the history of Kokborok language is aged. But, the language could not be developed. Now, efforts are being taken to develop the indigenous language and its cultural forms.
Kokborok is currently taught in 943 schools of the state. Halam-Kuki languages are taught in 49 schools, Chakma language is taught in 58 schools of the state. Two other minority languages of the state- Manipuri and Bishnupriya Manipuri are taught in 36 and 49 schools of the state, Chakraborty mentioned.
TTAADC Chief Executive Member Ranjit Debbarma underlined the history of Kokborok language and stressed on its development.
The Kokborok is a language of Borok people who are geographically known as Tripuris. It is one of the State Languages of Tripura notified on January 19, 1979. The TTAADC has declared the Kokborok as official language of the TTAADC on April 20, 1999. The Kokborok is now comprising 17 nos Language Code among the 47 Language Code in India according to the 6th All India Educational Survey. There are also 99 no languages having no language code as well.
Tripura’s Kokborok language is rapidly gaining ground as a medium of indigenous literature, despite the invasion of English as the medium of instruction.
