AGARTALA, Dec 24 (TIWN): Ahead of the golden jubilee year of the establishment of two leftist student organizations, SFI and TSU organized a procession in Belonia today.

As soon as the rally came in front of Bank Road, the police and TSR Jawans barricaded the procession and started lathi-charge for unknown reason.

The CPI (M) leaders alleged that the baton charge resulted in minor injuries to the protesters.

Opinion from eyewitnesses, one TSR jawan is responsible for today's untoward incident. The huge police and TSR forces led by Additional Superintendent of Police, Sub-Divisional Officer, OC of the police station of the southern district were well equipped while attacking the activists.

Besides, the Additional Superintendent of Police of the southern district did not want to hear about the incident even from former finance and health minister and MLA Sudhan Das, including opposition leader Badal Chowdhury.

Eventually, the CPIM leadership took to the field to handle the situation. Badal Chowdhury told the media at the roadblock that the procession had left with the permission of the police.

He questioned why the police barricaded and lathi-charged despite having permission. He alleged that such incidents were provocative and said that the matter would be reported directly to the South District Superintendent of Police.

Question arises, if the ruling BJP party can hold a political procession meeting, then why can't the opposition parties.
