AGARTALA, Sep 22 (TIWN): In the call of 'Joint Movement Committee', 12 hours strike has been observed in Kanchanpur today in protest against Bru families habilitation in Kanchanpur.
From morning no vehicle movement was seen in Kanchanpur. The way towards Jampui hills was closed with banners.
The issue of the strike was centering the permanent settlement of Brus in Kanchanpur. The joint movement committee along with Nagarik Mancha has alleged that due to Brus, many locals had lost their homes and remained homeless years after years and also many were forced to leave homes, whereas houses were burnt in violence.
The Joint movement said that Brus should be settled down anywhere but can't be dumped in Kanchanpur alone. On the other side, the Jampui hill locals, known as Mizo origin, which is called the Heaven of Tripura, have also disagreed with Brus settlement in Jampui, Kanchanpur.
Around 5000, Brus are in Tripura who came from Mizoram in 1997 and the Mizoram Govt and Tripura Govt could not send them back to home. Now, under Modi Govt once again the deal was done and this time, they got Tripura's residency promise and Mizoram Govt immediately slashed their names from Mizoram voter list.
However, the settlement has not been started and Modi Govt's 600 crores of promised package for Brus yet to be implemented. On the other side, locals under Joint Movement totally against Brus settlement in Kanchanpur, has observed strike in protest.
