AGARTALA, October 29 (TIWN): The impact of rubber plantation is that it ushered a silent socio-economic revolution in the far flung hamlets of the state, said minister for industries and commerce Tapan Chakraborty while delivering speech in the golden jubilee celebration of rubber plantation in Tripura at Pragna Bhaban, here today.

The rubber plantation development has witnessed several ups and downs. The challenges notwithstanding, the progress of plantation development has been quite impressive in the NE Region as a whole, particularly in Tripura, the minister said.

The economic rehabilitation project (Block Plantation Project) for Tribal Jhummiahs and the scheduled castes implemented by the rubber board was perhaps the first successful initiative which ensured convergence of various funds for developments, minister mentioned.

Tapan further said that, NR plantation can be integrated with other crops under an agro forestry concept and with livestock poultry etc. This is extremely relevant in the case of Tripura where significant tract of land is released for economic rehabilitation of indigenous people.

Around 90,000 rubber growers are present in the state and it gives an annual turnover of Rs. 476 crore, Chakraborty said.

Tripura is the second largest rubber producer in the country, after Kerala. More and more plantations are reaching yielding stage and the productivity levels are also encouraging. Keeping in view the area under plantation, growth potential and rubber production trends, the state  has  been identified  as the -second rubber capital of the country. There is a vast potential for setting up of rubber-based industries in the State, he added.

Chairman of Rubber Board Dr. A Jayathilak, Former Rubber Production commissioner and Present Executive Director of IL&FS Dr. A. K.
