KAILASHAHAR,October 24 (TIWN): 2 police constables were seriously injured and 5 others suffered major injuries when a group of smugglers in Debipur village near Bangladesh border attacked on a police party when they went there to raid a residence of an anti-social Nazir Ali, a well known smuggler of Bidi materials to Bangladesh. The incident took place at around 6pm on Friday. Police got an authentic information that Bidi materials are hoarded in Nazir Ali's residence and expected to be sold in Bangladesh crossing the border. Immediately SDPO Sudipta Das rushed to the spot with a large number of police and BSF personnel. As soon as the police reached the village, a group of 250 plus smugglers and villagers encircled the police force and without any provocation they attacked the police. Police too tried to take control over the situation. In the tussle 7 persons were badly injured but the condition of Ms Jasmine Debbarma and Indrajit Das, both police constables , are said to be critical.
They are admitted in Kailashahar Hospital .Others who were injured are Bapan Mia, Dhiren Deb and Dolan Das. A large number of police force is deployed in the area known for illegal activities and smugglers.
It is to be mentioned that Kali Puja is held in Kailashahar police station every year. This night cultural programmes were scheduled to be held. But this incident marred the total festivity. Tension still prevails around Debipur area. However, to avoid any untoward additional forces are called to calm the situation.
It is to be mentioned that smugglers in Akhaura Border near Agartala killed a BSF Jawan Sandip Kumar earlier this year on June 6 when BSF challenged the smuggling gang at Dakshin Ramnagar.
