AGARTALA, July 7 (TIWN): Tripura Govt has decided to handover few schools’ mid-day-meal projects of around 25,000 students to an NGO 'The Akshaya Patra Foundation' (TAPF) which has already triggered criticism across national media. On the oneside, the NGO is being praised for supplying hygienic food to around 1.8 million children across 15,000 schools in 12 states and doing a great charity work, at the opposite side, the c ritics say it is merely a contractor engaged by state governments to provide mid-day meals and is paid by the government for its services. The NGO however claimed that Govt provides 60% funds and 40% is given by the NGO from donations. However, if some states want to give egg, they have no objection, said the NGO, but here in Tripura CM Biplab Deb said that the NGO will not give eggs as it only supplies vegetarian food.Their only condition is that states will have to provide egg directly to students. Some states like Odisha and Telangana provide egg in their mid-day meals. There is different menu for each state.
In an article by journalist Archana Nathan recently, several school children in Karnataka complained that they did not like the food served they were served because it was bland. The reason for this, the report pointed out, is because Akshaya Patra does not add garlic and onion to the food, despite these ingredients featuring on the menu recommended by the state government.
Tripura Govt has decided to handover mid-day-meal projects of few schools in West District to this NGO.
The NGO claims under ISKCON, but in actual it’s motivated by ISKCON than to be a direct branch of ISKCON.
