AGARTALA, May 5 (TIWN): Tripura Journalist Saikat Talapatra was arrested illegally by West Agartala Police violating Supreme Court of India’s guidelines, advocate Purushottom Roy Barman has confirmed media after the journalist was released on bail.
The charges imposed on Saikat Talapatra if proven it can lead to 3 years of imprisonment, but any pre-arrest can not be done in this regard.
“Saikat Talapatra’s arrest was illegal. The IPCs which were imposed on him it does not authorize police to arrest him. It was a strict violation of Supreme Court’s guidelines. There is no provision of routine-arrest”, said Barman.
He mentioned, due to Chief Minister’s viral link with the report, police have arrested him. His facebook comment was noway a personal attack. Police have created a terror via Saikat Talapatra, so that people can not make any comment in social media. I am confident police will not file any case against the national media, because they wanted just to create a panic to make his “Prabhu” happy”.
Barman further said, “Court has proven that nobody is above the law and law can not be different for powerful people”.
