"Singh's relationship (with the accused Sanjv Singh) creates serious conflict of interest," a senior CBI official said.

Sources in the CBI said Singh's brother Sanjiv is accused of defrauding Allahabad Bank's Ranchi branch of Rs 6 crore. "About three years ago he had taken a loan of Rs 6 crore from the bank by allegedly forging documents and furnishing assets he did not own," an agency official said.

CBI later registered a case and started the probe following a complaint from the bank. Agency officials had even raided Singh's ancestral house in Ranchi last year.

Some senior agency officials questioned Singh's appointment as joint director in the bank fraud section last month. "His relationship with the accused is bound to create a conflict of interest as a result of which a fair and impartial probe is impossible. This is also against the norms of the Central Vigilance Commission manual," said an official who asked not to be named.
