Agartala, Nov 28 (TIWN / IANS) Princess of Thailand Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on Tuesday visited the famous archaeological site Unakoti in Tripura.
Accompanied by Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, the Princess on her maiden visit to the northeastern India went to northern Tripura's Unakoti by an Indian Air Force helicopter and after visiting the famed archaeological site, she returned to Agartala before leaving for Delhi.
According to historians, Unakoti, 175 km north of Agartala, is a "Shaiva" (Saivite) pilgrimage and archaeological site dating back to 7th-9th centuries or beyond.
Huge amazing rock carvings and murals with their primitive beauty in a big hill are present in Unakoti, which means one less than a crore.
"The images found at Unakoti are of two types, namely rock-carved figures and stone images. Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has taken numerous steps to protect the rare rock carvings, murals of many gods and goddess," former Director of Information and Cultural Affairs Department and renowned writer Subhash Das told IANS.
