AGARTALA, July 9 (TIWN): 67th Northeast Council Plenary meeting has greeted Tripura gymnast Dipa Karmakar on Monday for her excellent performance in World Championship of gymnastic held in Turkey. The meeting was organized under the Chairmanship of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, at Shillong attended by 8 Northeast states’ CMs and Governors. Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb has spoken regarding the achievement of Dipa Karmakar who has recently won gold medal in World Championship held in Turkey. All the members of NEC has hailed Dipa Karmakar’s achievement. During the meeting Chief Minister Biplab Deb has also raised demand before the Union Govt to improve and create world class gymnastic facilities in Tripura which was supported by other members. Union Minister Rajnath Singh has assured all possible helps for it, which will help state's gymnast talents to bloom.
Dipa Karmakar, who returned to action after two years due to injury, scored 14.150 to clinch the yellow metal. Dipa had topped the qualification round with a score of 13.400.
The 24-year-old has also qualified for the balance beam finals by finishing third in the qualification with a score of 11.850.
Dipa had to sit out for two years after undergoing surgery for Anetrior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury.
The lengthy lay-off period, which started after the 2016 Rio Olympics, also kept her out of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games held earlier this year.
Dipa will now feature in the Indian gymnastics squad at the upcoming Asian Games.
