CM's comment on Judiciary, Speaker’s decision on Opposition’s issues triggered pandemonium

AGARTALA, August 29 (TIWN):The beginning of monsoon session of Tripura assembly on Friday has witnessed one and half hours adjournment over the decision of Speaker Ramendra Debnath to disallow discussion on alleged comment of Chief Minister Manik Sarkar against Judiciary and disciplinary motion against the officials failed to prevent the spread of malaria in the state.In reference period Congress President and legislator D C Hrangkhwal demanded clarification from the Speaker why his motion on disciplinary action against the officials responsible for death of hundreds of innocent tribals in malaria was rejected.The Speaker Debnath could make any satisfactory reply that put ruling CPI-M in awkward condition.

To save tackle the situation, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar advised the Speaker to allow it in any convenient form to allow opposition to speak on the issue.

However, it could not make opposition happy.

They argued, “If motion moves, after a discussion, speaker should pass direction to the government to take action against the accused officials for whom failure more than 300 people including children died and 50,000 people got affected but in other form of discussion doesn’t have any such scope. So, CM proposed discussion in the house but no action against the accused officials.”

Next issue comes on refusal of reference of senior Congress legislator and former leader of the opposition Ratan Lal Nath on Chief Minister’s comment against Judiciary in the opening of ceremony of district court of Sepahijala at Sonamura on August 7 in presence of Chief Justice and three other judges of High Court of Tripura.

Speaker Debnath said that he will not allow any discussion related to judiciary in the assembly in any form and posture. The decision of the Speaker prompted opposition MLAs to come on Wales and raise protest.

Nath alleged indicating the HC decision of cancellation job of 10,323 illegally appointed school teachers, Chief Minister cautioned judges saying, “Since somebody has limitation to provide food to the people, so we must not also have right to take it away. And if it is continued in judiciary, people have to raise finger on the court.”  

Finally, at 1227 hours Speaker Mr Debnath adjourned the house till 1400 hrs.

Later, opposition members told press that Chief Minister started commenting on the functioning of the High Court and advising the judges over the judgments, it is considered to be an assault on judiciary and instigating commoners against judicial system and trying to destroy the independence of the judiciary, which is dangerous.

Earlier, both BJP and Trinamool Congress moved to Governor seeking action against Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar for his alleged defamatory comment against judiciary. BJP sought permission of Governor Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya to lodge FIR against Chief Minister Sarkar while All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), Tripura state committee urged Governor to recommend for promulgation of Article 355 of the constitution.
