NEW DELHI, Nov 24 : Rahul Gandhi Summoned by Pune Court Over Remarks on Savarkar
A Pune court has ordered Rahul Gandhi to appear in person in a defamation case related to his remarks on Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. The complaint was filed by Satyaki Savarkar, who alleged that Gandhi made false statements about Savarkar during a speech in London in March 2023.
According to the petition, Gandhi claimed that Savarkar had written about beating up a Muslim man and feeling happy about it. However, Savarkar's descendants deny that he ever made such a statement.
The court had previously asked the police to investigate the allegations, and the Vishrambaug police station found prima-facie truth in the complaint. Gandhi was initially summoned to appear on October 23, but he did not receive the summons.
Gandhi's lawyer, Milind Pawar, assured the court that the Congress leader would appear on the next date. However, the petitioner's lawyer, Sangram Kolhatkar, objected to Gandhi's representation due to a technicality.
The court has now summoned Gandhi to appear on December 2.
