GUWAHATI, June 17 : The three-year old BJP-led government in Manipur plunged into a crisis on Wednesday as three of its MLAs resigned and joined the Congress and six others withdrew support.
The legislators who withdrew support - four from the National People's Party (NPP) , one from Trinamool Congress and an Independent - also expressed desire to support the Congress. The BJP MLAs who resigned were: Subhashchandra Singh, TT Haokip and Samuel Jendai.
The Congress in Manipur is set to meet the Governor with a demand to convene a special session of assembly for a trust vote , while state industry minister Th Biswajit Singh told ET "there is no threat to the government.”
State Congress spokesperson Ningombam Bupenda Meitei told ET, “The beginning of downfall of BJP rule in India is happening today in Imphal, Manipur. Very soon, there will be a people's government which is the new Congress led coalition government in Manipur.
He said he was "confident" that three times chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh will become the new chief minister of Manipur.
