S-G Mehta to represent Delhi Police in riots case

New Delhi, Feb 27 (TIWN) Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal on Thursday appointed Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Maninder Kaur Acharya and some others to represent Delhi Police in matters relating to the current law and order situation in violence-hit areas of the national capital.

A letter to DCP Legal Cell of the city police from the Home Department read, "I am directed to convey the approval of Hon''ble Lt Governor, Delhi for the appointment of Tushar Mehta, SG, Maninder Kaur Acharya, ASG, Amit Mahajan, Advocate and Rajat Nair, Advocate in W.P.(Crl.) /2020, to represent Delhi Police in the above titled case and in all other matters arising out of law and order situation in the area of North East, Shahdara and East District of Delhi 23.02.2020 onwards."  Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court bench headed by Justice S. Muralidhar on Wednesday passed a series of orders with regards to the violence in Delhi''s northeast district and said that "another 1984-like situation cannot be allowed to happen in this city under its watch".  "We have to be alert," said Justice Muralidhar and ordered safe passage for collection of bodies of deceased, setting up of adequate number of helplines, shelter to people who have been displaced among other things.  "We propose to appoint amicus curie to coordinate between victims and agencies to ensure that prompt action is taken," the court added.  The division bench also comprising Justice Talwant Singh ruled that, "It is extremely unfortunate what has happened. This is the time to show that ''Z'' security works for everybody. Otherwise we cannot restore peace. Every victim should be visited by higher functionaries," the court said.
