Chennai, Nov 11 (TIWN) Former Election Commissioner T.N. Seshan, who was known for strict implementation of electoral laws and rules to clean up Indian elections, passed away at his residence here on Sunday following cardiac arrest, family sources said. He was 86.
TN Seshan ruthlessly enforced the model code of conduct and led game-changing electoral reforms in the 1990s when he served as the 10th CEC from December 12, 1990, to December 11, 1996. TN Seshan's daughter Srividhya said he was not keeping good health for the past couple of years and passed away at 9.45 pm. "Sad to announce that Shri TN Seshan [former Chief Election Commissioner of India] passed away a short while ago. He was a true legend and a guiding force for all his successors. I pray for peace to his soul," said SY Quraishi, former CEC. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled TN Seshan's demise saying, "Shri TN Seshan was an outstanding civil servant. He served India with utmost diligence and integrity. His efforts towards electoral reforms have made our democracy stronger and more participative. Pained by his demise. Om Shanti."
