SC extends NRC deadline for 1 month, declines plea for re-verification

New Delhi, July 23 (TIWN) The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended the July 31 deadline to August 31 for the publication of the final draft of the NRC in Assam while it rejected the plea of the Centre and the Assam government for 20 per cent sample re-verification in the districts bordering Bangladesh.
NRC State Coordinator Prateek Haleja apprised the court that during the sample verification, around 80 lakh people were automatically re-verified The NRC exercise is aimed at identifying illegal immigrants in Assam, mostly making their way from Bangladesh
