NEW DELHI, Nov 21 (TIWN): Kenyan President William Ruto on Thursday scrapped controversial deals with India's embattled Adani Group over Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and a state-owned electricity service.
“Of the many difficult assignments I have undertaken, this fight against corruption will give results going forward…… In the face of undisputed evidence or credible information on corruption, I have taken a decisive action. I now direct (following Article 10 of the constitution) on transparency and accountability and based on new information, provided by investigative agencies and partner nations, that the procuring agencies within the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, immediately canceled the ongoing procurement process for the JKIA expansion, public-private partnership transactions,” said President Ruto.
“Let me repeat for clarity. I have said that because of the information provided by partner nations and agencies, I have directed the agencies within the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of energy and Petroleum to immediately cancel the JKIA Expansion Public Private Partnership transaction, as well as the recently concluded KETRACO transmission line,” the President of Kenya repeated.
The decision was taken after the Indian group's founder Gautam Adani was charged in the United States with massive bribery and fraud.

Indian billionaire and close friend of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is now under US’s investigation rudder. But why Adani was indicted? The word “indictment” is used in the US when officially someone is charged with a serious accusation.
“This indictment alleges schemes to pay over $250 million in bribes to Indian government officials, to lie to investors and banks to raise billions of dollars, and to obstruct justice,” Deputy Assistant Attorney General Lisa Miller said in the statement.
“These offenses were allegedly committed by senior executives and directors to obtain and finance massive state energy supply contracts through corruption and fraud at the expense of US investors,” she added.
Gautam Adani, chairman of the Adani Group, and seven others, including his nephew Sagar Adani, have been indicted by US prosecutors for allegedly paying $265 million (Rs 2,029 crore) in bribes to Indian government officials. This was done to secure lucrative solar energy contracts with state electricity distribution companies, expected to generate over $2 billion in profits. The bribes were allegedly paid between 2020 and 2024, and US prosecutors said that this information was concealed from US banks and investors who invested billions in the solar energy project.
